With Aragorn, the world of The Lord of the Rings saw a new era that they never thought would happen.
Anyone who has read the incredible Lord of the Rings or seen Peter Jackson’s film trilogy will remember that the main plot is about the destruction of the One Ring. Undoubtedly what is most urgent is to reach Mount Doom, throw the ring and thus destroy Sauron, but during the story there are other very relevant subplots.
Possibly, the most important subplot of The Lord of the Rings would be Aragorn’s journey to become the King of Gondor, something that was not a bed of roses for him, nor for his ancestors, because for certain reasons, he could not claim the throne until the end of Tolkien’s magnum opus. But after completing the mission of the Fellowship of the Ring, saving Gondor (and Rohan) he was finally able to become the monarch of the new United Kingdom (the territories of Gondor and Arnor).
Even so, although the books give more detail about what happened after his coronation, in the movies it is not known what happened after that moment, which is why we will try to explain it here.
What did Aragorn do after the events of The Lord of the Rings?
Aragorn was the twenty-sixth King of Arnor, thirty-fifth King of Gondor, and the first High King of the United Kingdom (a variant title of High King of Arnor and Gondor held by Elendil and Isildur). Aragorn was crowned King Elessar (Elfstone in Quenya, an Elvish language) and his dynasty was known as the House of Telcontar (Strider, the name by which he was known in Bree but also in Quenya).
During his reign, great emphasis was placed on re-encouraging communication between men, dwarves, and elves, something that became very evident in the various campaigns to rebuild Middle-earth. King Elessar’s reign was a time of great prosperity and harmony, reminiscent of glorious Númenor in its good times.
Despite this peace, the United Kingdom found itself embroiled in military campaigns against the Eastmen who dwelt in the distant and mysterious Rhûn, and also against the Haradrim to the south. All the campaigns were led by Aragorn and his great ally, King Eomer of Rohan. These wars ended with the victory of the men of the west and served for Gondor to regain territories that they lost centuries ago, such as the port of Umbar, located in Near Harad.
Aragorn ended up marrying Arwen, daughter of Elrond, being the third and last union between man and elves. They were very happy and after a time they had a son, Eldarion, a name that in Quenya meant “son of the eldar”. The name was not chosen at random since, due to the fact that in the Fourth Age the elves abandoned their kingdoms of Middle-earth, Eldarion had a right over those territories due to the fact that he descends from the three elven lineages (Vanyar, Noldor and Teleri) by part of mother Also, he has Dunedain blood on his father’s side, which is why he is the heir to the United Kingdom.
After more than 122 years of reign, Aragorn decided to die in the same way that the kings of old did, when they said so. Thus, the first monarch of the United Kingdom died at the age of 210, once again honoring his incredible lineage. Next to Aragorn’s grave, were those of Merry and Pippin, who had already passed away a long time ago. Her son Eldarion succeeded to the throne, Arwen, grieving the loss of her husband, left Minas Tirith and went to Lothlórien to spend her last days in solitude before dying.
This was the story of Aragorn after the events of The Lord of the Rings, he proved to be the leader his people needed, he honored his lineage more than enough and restored the honor lost among men.
