JAKARTA – Javelin anti-tank missiles are the main weapon Ukraine used to ward off attacks Russia . This missile is produced by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.
The Javelin was first developed under the auspices of the United States (US) military in 1989. The United States Army, Fort Benning, Georgia began using it in 1996. It is known that the Javelin missile replaced the US M47 Dragon.

It consists of two parts, including the CLU (Command Launch Unit) and the launch tube with the missile. CLU can be used again, while the launch tube is only used once.
The operator must first attach the tube with the missile to the CLU. Then the operator removes the empty canister and mounts the missile for the next shot. The CLU has channels with thermal imaging for surveillance, reconnaissance, and target prioritization.

There are two attack modes, namely top attack and direct attack. Top attack mode is used to attack tanks as well as other armored vehicles. Meanwhile, in direct attack mode, the missile flies directly towards the target. This mode is used to attack buildings, bunkers, and groups of troops.
The Javelin missile has a payload warhead weighing 8.4 kilograms. Javelin can destroy any main battle tank in the world. Its maximum firing range is 2,500 meters. The manufacturer then developed a version of the Javelin with a maximum range of 4,750 meters. Javelin is considered as an effective weapon.
In 2022, Ukraine uses the Javelin missile against Russia. The Javelin proved effective against Russian battle tanks, such as the T-72. The Javelin anti-tank missile has been exported to 20 countries. In addition, it was also used during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
