Xbox Game Pass is a wonderful service that allows users to have access to a lot of games and developers to earn money with proposals that they may consider risky. With that being said, the TUNIC distributor believes that independent studios should fear the future that will bring us services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.
Recently, Bekah Saltsman, CEO of Finji, the company that was in charge of the distribution of TUNIC, had an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. In her she talked about Xbox Game Pass and the positive impact it has had on the video game industry.
Although Saltsman believes that Xbox Game Pass has brought good things, he also fears that the popularization of subscription services will deal a heavy blow to independent video games. Especially those of small developers who are just starting out.
This was what Saltsman said about it:
“My concern is that because libraries are so big and companies are so prolific with huge user bases, they don’t need us.
If on your service most people only play one game and subscriptions work better with games as a service, could you justify a reasonable budget for this other project that would have a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of players compared to something that does a large chunk of the numbers in the service?”

Finji thinks services like Game Pass are awesome and scary
According to Saltsman, it’s a situation that makes subscription services “amazing and terrifying” at the same time. Especially since there may come a point where they simply don’t have the space to support independent proposals.
“Subscriptions are amazing and terrifying at the same time, and it could go either way. And what worries me the most is that smaller indie teams, who may not have established themselves as creators anytime soon, don’t have the space or money to do more than one game,” he said.
Finally, Saltsman shared what he hopes for the future of the services: “My only wish is that they please continue to pay for the work teams do in a way that doesn’t hurt them. Pay them a decent salary built into these purchases.” “.
And you, what do you think about the Finji manager’s statements? Do you think he is right or that the services do not threaten independent developers? Tell us in the comments.
