James Gunn has officially unveiled the new DCU. But what about Joker? And what about The Batman, by Robert Pattinson?
A lot of people are wondering how Joker and The Batman fit into the new DCU.. James Gunn and Peter Safran have explained that these two DC Comics movies will function as Elseworlds (Other Worlds). The DC Universe is about to enter a new era for Warner Bros. Discovery under the new regime of DC Studios. After years of fighting with the DCEU, DC Studios is replacing the DC Films initiative with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm. The co-CEOs will oversee DCU-related television, movies, animation, and video games. The big priority is launching a DCU that helps unite DC’s iconic heroes and villains as part of a cohesive universe.
The media recently attended a DC Studios event where the first half of Chapter 1 was revealed. During a Q&A session, Gunn and Safran were asked about DC properties taking place outside of the main continuity. from the DCU. According to Safran, the DC Universe is a multiverse, but they will focus on one main continuity. Everything that is not main will make it very clear. The Batman and Joker movies are being treated as Elseworlds properties, which will be the case with other non-DCU DC projects as well.. From now on, projects that are not part of this saga will be better labeled.
What are the DC Comics Elseworlds?
Warner Bros. Pictures
Elseworlds, for those unfamiliar, was a DC Comics imprint that launched over two decades ago. The brand focused on stories disconnected from the main DC continuity.. In recent years, the label has been all but replaced by DC Black Label, which began in 2018. In December 2022, Gunn made it clear that the Elseworlds movies are in development and part of his strategy. It makes sense to him then that Joker and The Batman would be outside of the main DCU.
