Skate is about to come back on PCSteam Deck, PS5 and Xbox Series X | S (at least), but before it seems that this remake has “loot boxes” in the last beta internal and leaks how they work.
The last testers the Skate have shared information with the Insider Gaming portal about the controversial box system that was leaked through dataminig in the summer of 2022.
Originally labeled as “Swag Bags”, said feature was met with harsh criticism from fans, though now it may not be as bad as first feared.

First of all you have to understand that Skate is going to be a free game and it would have other ways of monetizing, so we know the only way to get loot boxes it is with the game’s own currency: ‘Stars’.
This is achieved by completing challenges, the higher it is, the more Stars you receive. Previous Datamines have suggested that other in-game currencies called ‘Taps’ can also be used to exchange for Stars if necessary.
For now, this option is not available in testing, but it is known that Taps are obtained by doing tricks, playing rounds and increasing the reputation level (the in-game leveling system).

The consensus among testers is that Taps or other currencies can be buy with real money. Each box is priced between 2 and 3 Stars, but the best items will be in the 3 Stars; objects range from table stickers to furniture.
Each box has 5 objects that can be seen before buying, although you only receive one of them when you get the box. There is no percentage for each one and they can be published to those given to the player by ‘Hype’, a system similar to that of Apex Legends.
For now there is no box with the 1000 items available and there seem to be 16 loot boxes with 5 items in each (80 in total). Presumably more boxes and variations will be added during events etc.
For now this system seems decently “fair” as far as a loot box system goes, though adding percentage to each item might be a lot better than leaving it blank.
Duplicates would become less and less rare if more and more objects, special events, etc. are added.
Is this going to change ahead of launch? It is not known, but perhaps all this type of information together with the reactions of the players of feedback a EA.
