COPENHAGEN – Rasmus Paludan, a Swedish-Danish politician who is anti-Islam, is again in the spotlight. The reason is that on Friday (27/1/2023), he again burned the Koran near the mosque and outside the Turkish Embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark.
He even threatened to routinely burn copies of the Koran until Sweden was accepted as NATO. Even though he often burns Korans, so far he has not been arrested either. Here’s why.
1. Rasmus Paludan Gets Permit
Rasmus Paludan has burned the Koran several times. On Friday (27/1/2023), Rasmus again burned the Koran near a mosque and outside the Turkish embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark. Finally, he did it on January 21, 2023 in the middle of a demonstration in Sweden.
It is known, Paludan has received permission for the action. When he set fire to it, Sweden was struggling to convince Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to give permission for Sweden to join NATO.
The decision to allow the burning of the Koran comes amid strained relations between Sweden and Turkey.
Paludan not only burned the Koran with permission from the authorities, but also received protection from the police officers who guarded it.
2. Sweden Has a Freedom of Expression and Protest Act
Because it was considered part of freedom of expression and opinion, the Swedish government gave permission for Rasmus Paludan to burn the Koran.
It is known, Sweden has a Freedom of Expression and Protest Act. However, the law should not cross the line to cause hatred.
