Craig Mazin, showrunner of The Last of Us series, is very interested in the plot of the franchise and the catastrophic scenario he imagines after the emergence of a dangerous outbreak. The creator believes that the threat of Cordyceps and other fungi is more real than many believe.
During a recent interview, Mazin talked about the beginning of the first chapter, where he talks about the risk of certain fungi evolving, taking control of our brain and turning us into uncontrolled beings. The showrunner stated that all this has scientific support, which is why he believes that it is a real threat.

Could The Last of Us Outbreak Happen in Real Life? Mazin thinks
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Mazin revealed that all the information about fungi, their behavior and possible evolution has scientific support. Likewise, he stressed that there is currently a real and latent danger related to them.
“It is real. It is true to the extent that whatever it says mushrooms do, they do. They currently do and have been doing it forever. There are some notable documentaries that you can watch that are pretty scary.”
Despite the above, he believes that the panorama is not and will not be as catastrophic as in The Last of Us. He knows of the existence of fungi that change the behavior of certain insects and transform them into a kind of zombie. Mazin thinks this is unlikely to happen to us in the future.
“Now your warning: what if they evolve and enter us? — from a purely scientific point of view, would they do to us exactly what they do to ants? I do not think. I doubt it. On the other hand, you’re right: LSD and psilocybin come from mushrooms. What I said to John was, ‘What we’re doing in this scene is telling people that this has always been here,'” Mazin said.
We know that the creative spoke with scientists to better understand everything related to the outbreak. He did something similar for his work on Chernoby, a series that was also very well received.
