The series The Last Of Us based on the famous video game is about to premiere on HBO Max and its creator explains why a movie was a bad idea.
The year 2013, Naughty Dog premiere The Last Of Us, a survival horror video game that had a brutal story. For this reason, an adaptation to another medium such as film or television was a logical step and now HBO Max has made it possible. But… Would it have worked as a movie? The creator of the game Neil Druckman, clearly not. This was revealed in a recent interview in Variety.
“The short answer is that the story is too long. We tried to make it into a movie, and it didn’t work because what is usually a 15-hour experience and compressing it into two hours, didn’t work and something else always comes up that I felt was important to the story. This time it allowed us to take our time and slowly get on with the relationship between Joel and Ellie, during a year-long journey that could only have been adapted into a TV show.”

What is the series about?
The world is suffering from a brutal pandemic caused by a fungus that turns humans into carnivorous monsters. The first days everything is chaos and the protagonist Joel Miller (Peter Pascal) loses his daughter tragically. Then there is a time jump and humanity survives as best it can in closed cities and there are some like Joel who are in charge of transporting people from one place to another. But when he meets Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) everything changes, especially because it reminds him of his daughter and she has received a bite without catching it, so it could be the key to a cure. So many go after the young woman and only Joel decides to protect her.
The Last Of Us It will be released on January 15, 2023.
