“Keep dreaming, follow your dreams, keep manifesting, dream together with your friends and in the end you might end up here with all Hagenezen”, band member Boaz Kok said to the audience.
According to the jury report, Goldband has made the greatest impact on Dutch pop music in the past year ‘as a soundtrack to the post-corona era, with performances full of bang, following its own artistic vision and success among a broad group of listeners’.
This week, the band was in the news negatively because a video circulated online in which Milo Driessen seems to be openly snorting cocaine during a performance. It provoked a lot of indignant and angry reactions from people who think that the singer normalizes the use of drugs and is a bad example for young fans.
Goldband made its final breakthrough last year. Thanks to performances at all major festivals, the band, consisting of Kok, Karel Gerlach and Milo Driessen, became mainstream and the album Affordable Romanticism from 2021 caught on with a wide audience. The single Emergency became a top 10 hit and even entered the top 100 of the NPO Radio 2 Top 2000. The hit Siekem followed in November, a collaboration with singer Maan.
The Popprijs has been awarded for the 36th time and is annually awarded to the band or artist who has made the most important contribution to Dutch pop music in the past year. As always, the prize consists of a check for 10,000 euros and a sculpture by artist Theo Mackaay.
Frequently mentioned contenders this year were Eefje de Visser, Goldband, Antoon and Froukje. Last year, DI-RECT was declared the winner. Other recent winners include Floor Jansen (2019), Ronnie Flex (2018), Kensington (2017) and Martin Garrix (2016).
