The ranking of matches with the most goals in the Italian championship is led by the historic match between Milan and Atalanta on 15 October 1972, but on that occasion the Nerazzurri were sacrificed
Ten goals scored in ninety minutes: Atalanta and Salernitana came close to breaking the record, which has belonged to the people of Bergamo for more than fifty years. The match won 8-2 by Gasperini’s team ranks seventh in the ranking of matches with the most goals in the history of Serie A. We haven’t seen so many since 2017, when Inzaghi’s Lazio triumphed 7-3 with Sampdoria. And yet, there are those who have managed to do better…
GENOA-LAZIO 6-5
—
On 15 November 1942, Silvio Piola’s Lazio came out defeated after ninety minutes of comebacks… and counter-comebacks. After a quarter of an hour the biancocelesti are ahead 2-0, then Genoa takes the lead (3-2), Lazio overtakes them again and collapses in the second half: from 3-4 to 6-4, before the Piola’s last goal. In that case, we can be sure, both fans enjoyed themselves…
INTER-MILAN 6-5
—
In 1950 Juventus won the Scudetto, but the Milanese were the protagonists of one of the most closely contested derbies in history. Those were the times of Amedeo Amadei in the Nerazzurri and Nordahl in the Rossoneri and – no small curiosity – the eleven goals were scored within an hour. In the 20th minute Milan were already ahead 1-4, then Amadei let loose and Inter went up 6-5. The goal that fixes the result arrives in the 64th minute.
ATALANTA-MILAN 4-7
—
When it comes to goalscoring, Atalanta is involved. Sometimes as a winner and sometimes as a loser, as happened on Christmas Eve 1950. The opponents were always Nordahl’s Rossoneri, who – a year after the derby loss against Inter – went down in history with another record match. From Bergamo, however, they returned triumphant.
MILAN-NOVARA 9-2
—
Well yes: it was always the same team and always the same period. September 1950, three months before the success against Atalanta. The man of the match (so to speak) was Gunnar Nordahl, author of a four-of-a-kind that knocked out his opponents. Arangelovic scored for Novara, protagonist with a brace, which was not enough to keep his teammates in the game.
INTER-BAR 9-2
—
Inter was still called “Ambrosiana”: it was 9 January 1938 and the leader of the Nerazzurri was Giuseppe Meazza. In the previous 14 league days, the attacker had scored six goals. That day he scored five, starting the climb towards the Scudetto and towards the second title of top scorer of his career.
MILAN-ATALANTA 9-3
—
We were talking about record-breaking Atalanta. Not winning, but still defeated, with a goal difference identical to that of Nicola’s Salernitana: -6. The match with the most goals (12) in Serie A history was played on 15 October 1972, when Milan put goalkeeper Pianta through four times in the first half and five more in the second half. It was Rivera’s Milan (brace), Prati (hat-trick).
