While losing is a key part of any esports competition, it’s clear that losing is very frustrating. The players try to control their emotions in front of the audience and the rest of the participants, but on some occasions they are unable to do so and rage on the spot.
Genesis 9 took place last weekend, a major event that hosts Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournaments and more fighting games. High profile players such as MKLeo, MuteAce and many more turned out.
However, the protagonist of this story is Michael “Riddles” Kim, a prestigious Canadian Super Smash Bros. pro player who is part of the Team Liquid esports group. This time, he made headlines for reasons that generated a heated debate on social media.

Pro player destroys his controller in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament
During his participation in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament, Riddles savored the bitter taste of losing to Chase, a player who used Palutena. Already in the losers’ bracket, he faced Nassim “Leon” Laib.
The confrontation between both players excited the spectators. Riddles started with an advantage, but the situation took a 180 degree turn when Leon changed character and strategy. In the end, the Canadian player lost and was eliminated from the contest.
The result of the meeting surprised locals and strangers. As the Kotaku portal highlights, Michael Kim was one of the favorites to win the tournament, so it was expected that he would at least reach the best positions. However, he was ranked 33rd.
After losing the match, Riddles immediately stands up, lamenting the result. Immediately, he remains static in the chair for a couple of minutes until, at one point, he gets up again to violently throw his controller against the ground. After this, he picks up his backpack and leaves the place. He goes without saying that those present are shocked by these events.
Riddles causes controversy after losing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament
As expected, this curious event generated a heated debate on social networks. Many netizens criticized Michael Kim’s attitude and claimed that he was unprofessional, while others defended him and claimed that he is also a human with emotions.
In statements for the Kotaku portal, Nassim “Leon” Laib stated that he did not believe that he could defeat Riddles, so the result of the match surprised him. Although he affirms that the attitudes of his rival have no justification, he affirms that he understands it and acknowledges that he would be sad too.

“Riddles’ reaction is completely (unwarranted) in any kind of big competition. It’s easy to see that. Throwing your own controller to release frustration isn’t the best move, but it only concerns him. As long as he respects his opponents (as he did in this case), there is nothing unpleasant (about what he did). I too would be sad and frustrated to be out of the tournament so soon,” Leon said.
Amid the controversy, Riddles temporarily deactivated his Twitter account, though his profile returned to normal soon after. His followers took advantage of the most recent photograph to share words of encouragement.
But tell us, what do you think of this situation? Do you think Michael “Riddles” Kim was wrong? Do you think he has the right to vent? Let us read you in the comments.
