consumption of avocado in United States increased eight times in the last 20 years both for the promotional ones and because the taste for guacamole was increased in important events such as the Super Bowl 2023said the general director of the Association of Avocado Producers and Packers-Exporters of Mexico (APEAM), José Armando López Orduña.
In the year 2000, the average consumption per American was one pound, while in 2022 it was 4 kilos, that is, consumption grew eight times more. With what they approach the consumption that there is in Mexico between 7 and 7.5 kilos of said fruit per Mexican.
But in USA the avocado it is mostly consumed in guacamoleas if it were dip and is accompanied by corn tortilla chips, the general director of APEAM exposed to EL UNIVERSAL.
As the Super Bowl was toured one more weeksince it will take place on the second weekend of February, on Sunday the 12th, and not on the first Sunday as usual, the Mexican exporters will have one more week to send more avocado.
This means that instead of 100,000 tons of avocado being sent to be consumed in the Super Bowl, as was regularly done in past years, in this 2023 it is expected to reach 131 thousand tons.
One of the trends that is now being observed is that people not only consume guacamole during the Super Bowl, but also at college games, increasing the demand in the United States.
Now, “We are in the middle of the shipment stage, previous shipments are analyzed before the first week of January” and continue during the first month of the year, but “since they changed the date of the Super Bowl (57 to be held in Arizona) that will give us a handicap to complement the exports up to 131 thousand tons”.
Promotions also continue and there will be a commercial during the second quarter of the game on February 12, so the agency is already preparing the commercial.
