SIENA, 23 JAN – Due to the snow, a couple had to deliver their baby at home, guided by the midwife connected via telephone. It happened in San Quirico d’Orcia (Siena) after the heavy snow that fell all morning in the Siena area. The two parents led by Dr. Leila Teodorani of the Siena-Grosseto Operations Center of 118, managed the birth independently. The ambulance, due to the inconvenience caused to the roads by the snowfall, arrived but only after the birth had already taken place, with the baby in hypothermia due to the extreme cold of the day, despite the fact that the house was adequately heated. Once on site, the doctor Luca Berti and the health workers of the Misericordia di Montalcino Alessio Marconi and Angelo Bonacchi immediately proceeded to transport the mother and son to the Le Scotte hospital in Siena. It was the ambulance crew who cut the umbilical cord. Currently hospitalized in the Obstetrics department of the Siena hospital, mother and baby are doing well. Between San Quirico and Siena there are 40 km to cover on the Cassia state road, with asphalt free of snow, but it was difficult for the ambulance to get out of Montalcino and reach San Quirico about 15 km away covered in snow. The two villages suffered today serious hardships due to the snow. (HANDLE).
