Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus has won her first Grand Slam title. The 24-year-old Sabalenka won the Australian Open by beating Kazakhstani Elena Rybakina in the final in three sets: 4-6 6-3 6-4. She used her fourth match point. The player from Minsk, who is participating in Melbourne under a neutral flag because of Belarus’ involvement in the war in Ukraine, succeeds the Australian Ashleigh Barty as the winner of the Australian Open.
The 23-year-old Rybakina, born in Russia, won her first grand slam title at Wimbledon last year. Sabalenka reached the final of a grand slam tournament for the first time on Saturday. The number 5 in the world earned almost 2 million euros with her overall victory in Melbourne.
