After having been nominated for a Goya for animation for Gora Automatikoa (2021), David Galán Galindo returns to directing with Matusalén, a Spanish comedy starring Julián López and Miren Ibarguren, in which we will also see Lucía de la Fuente, Jason Fernández and Elena de Lara.
Methuselah is still in production process and during these days The shooting of the film is taking place at the Complutense University of Madridwhere we have been able to approach to talk to the team that is making it possible.
What is the Methuselah movie about?
Methuselah tells us the story of a rapper adult, played by Julian Lopez, who has to go back to college to convince his dad that rap isn’t nonsense. “I am a rapper“, explains David Galán Galindo, “and for me that is a very important part of my life. Then I have always wanted to make a film in which I pour out that passion and I thought it was fun to do a comedy.”
Director of Methuselah ensures that rappers take their culture very seriously and for this very reason he wanted to make this film himself: “well, I’d rather make it myself, since I’m going to make it from the inside, than have someone make it from the outside.” However, that carries an additional burden: “I have the responsibility to do it myself to make it clear how it should be done. And that is a problem”.
Where to see the best current Spanish films? Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video and more
“The only mission of this film is to make people laugh. and that people have fun watching it”, says David Galán Galindo. “It is a comedy that will make people laugh. And the good thing about comedies is that: it is very well understood if they work or not, in case people laugh.
Director of Secret Origins (2020) He comments that during the filming they have laughed a lot: “there have been shots that we had to cut because it was that we were upset.” Her goal with her is no longer to win a goya automatic, Rather, people go to the movies to forget their problems and say: “My goodness, my stomach hurts.”
David Galan Galindo he has achieved this thanks to a solid script but especially thanks to the cast of the film: “many times, when I see it, I say: this is much more fun now with you than what I have written”.
“And then there is one thing that makes me very angryand I tell Julián, and it’s that they have a sequence and they say the text and it’s funny, but then they add one more sentence as the end, and the most fun is what they put. Man, I can’t believe I spend two years writing the script, working on this, they come in, they drop some bullshit at the end and the funny thing is the bullshit at the end!”
Future projects of David Galán Galindo
Despite the fact that David Galán Galindo has worked on several productions in different formats, he considers that Methuselah it is truly his second film after Secret Origins: “Auto Up I don’t even understand it as a movie, it’s like a kind of entertainment, right? it’s a prank”.
Therefore, as a filmmaker, feel more inclined to work with real image, although he does not rule out trying animation again, since “in principle it leaves more freedom.” But if he did take the leap, he would make a “real” animated film, not like Gora Automatikoa.
They choose the 10 funniest characters in comedy series: do you agree?
When we have interviewed the team Methuselahwere in the last days of shooting of the film, and we wanted to anticipate the next steps that will be taken in making it: “I think that we are not going to have much post production, but something will have. Obviously, in the end, there are some things that have to be solved with chroma, or you have to delete certain things, right?
But it is true that they say that the record for shots in a film with the most post-production is held by David Fincher, which hasn’t done science fiction, was one of these normal Fincher movies. Because he has put post-production on a lot of things that don’t seem to have it. But hey, they are other types of movies. This comedy… Resins does not need post-production, it comes post-produced from home”.
Methuselah still does not have a confirmed release date, but David Galán Galindo is betting that we will be able to see it this year: “everything I know tells me that it will be in 2023and I would also like to”.
