Real Madrid remains in the footsteps of leader FC Barcelona. The national champion won 2-0 at Athletic Club in Bilbao. The Madrilenians of coach Carlo Ancelotti are on 41 points due to the victory. That is 3 less than the Catalans who won 1-0 against Getafe earlier in the evening.
The home team from Bilbao started the game fiercely, but did not score. Karim Benzema did. The French striker took the ball on foot after a header from Marco Asensio in the 24th minute and shot in beautifully.
It was Benzema’s 228th goal in the Spanish league. In doing so, he passed Real Madrid icon Alfredo di Stéfano and equaled Raúl’s number. Only Cristiano Ronaldo scored more goals for Real Madrid in La Liga.
In the second half, Athletic looked for the equalizer and thought they had made it through Iñaki Williams from the rebound after a nice save from Thibaut Courtois, but Williams was offside. Toni Kroos made it 0-2 in the last minute of official time with a low shot.
