PSV captain Luuk de Jong sustained a head injury in the league match against Vitesse on Saturday. After half an hour of play, the captain came into contact with defender Melle Meulensteen in a head duel, who was able to continue.
De Jong was able to leave the field on his own, but looked shaken. Goalkeeper Walter Benítez took over the captain’s armband from De Jong, who was replaced by Johan Bakayoko. Reserve captains André Ramalho and Marco van Ginkel are on the reserve bench.
Shortly before leaving the field, De Jong missed a penalty kick. The Orange international shot the ball softly, allowing keeper Kjell Scherpen to save.
De Jong’s injury is a major setback for PSV, which saw attackers Cody Gakpo (Liverpool) and Noni Madueke (Chelsea) leave earlier this transfer period.
