Storming parliament
Television images show protesters throwing fireworks and stones at police. According to a local radio station, protesters also tried to storm the parliament.
The Peruvians are protesting against President Dina Boluarte, the president who came to power in Peru after the removal of Pedro Castillo in December last year. The demonstrators demand her resignation, the dissolution of parliament and the release of the ex-president.
Coup attempt
Castillo, a former village teacher, sought to avoid a no-confidence vote in December by dissolving parliament. However, that decided to remove him from his position.
Castillo was arrested on charges of attempted coup and is still in custody. His supporters have taken to the streets many times since the arrest. More than 45 people have been killed and many injured in clashes with the police.
