Many protests are also underway in the capital Lima and several people were injured. Tens of thousands of people gathered in the center of the capital on Thursday under the motto ‘the capture of Lima’. There they clashed with the riot police.
Television images show protesters throwing fireworks and stones at police. According to a local radio station, protesters also tried to storm the parliament.
The Peruvians are protesting against President Dina Boluarte, the president who came to power in Peru after the removal of Pedro Castillo in December last year. The demonstrators demand her resignation, the dissolution of parliament and the release of the ex-president.
Castillo, a former village teacher, sought to avoid a no-confidence vote in December by dissolving parliament. However, that decided to remove him from his position.
Castillo was arrested on charges of attempted coup and is still in custody. His supporters have taken to the streets many times since the arrest. More than 45 people have been killed and many injured in clashes with the police.
The protests are creating dangerous situations in Peru and have led to airports being occupied and several access roads being blocked. Many travelers have nowhere to go. This also applied to Marnix and Femke, but they managed to flee with the help of a skipper. Watch their story below:
