Live helicopter footage from local media shows a white van believed to contain the suspect surrounded by armored police vehicles. The encirclement is in the city of Torrance, south of Los Angeles, just over 25 miles from Monterey Park, the city of mostly Asian residents where the shooting happened.
According to witnesses, the suspect, described as a ‘man of Asian descent’, had fled in a white van. Police have also released photos and a description of the suspect:
At least ten people were killed and ten injured in the Monterey Park shooting. Four injured people are in a critical condition in hospital. The gunman fled before police arrived at the club. Police have yet to say anything about the motive. For example, it is still being investigated whether the perpetrator knew the victims.
Nightclub owner dead
The man opened fire in a nightclub an hour after the Chinese New Year was celebrated in the city. Witnesses told the Los Angeles Times newspaper that he fired at random with a semi-automatic rifle.
He would have had ammunition with him to reload his rifle. According to those present at the club, the owner of the nightclub is one of the dead.
