Suara.com – The case of an accident that killed a student named Selvi Amalia Nuraeni involving an Audi A8 car is still a topic that is widely discussed today.
The issue of the police’s second wife was then widely questioned by the public. So, can police or civil servants have two wives or husbands?
Prior to the accident, in 2021, a male civil servant with the initials SZ, 52 years old, was known to have had seven wives. SZ works at the Praya State Attorney, Central Lombok.
Of the seven wives, three of them have a marriage certificate or have taken the legal route of marriage. While the other four are the result of unregistered marriages.

Responding to this case, civil servants/police actually have rules for having more than one wife. Launching Online Law, special provisions governing civil servant marriage permits to have more than one wife (polygamy) are contained in Government Regulation No. 45 of 1990 concerning Amendments to Government Regulation Number 10 of 1983 concerning Permits for Marriage and Divorce for Civil Servants (“PP 45/1990”), specifically in Article 4 PP 45/1990 which reads:
(1) A male Civil Servant who intends to have more than one wife must first obtain permission from the Official.
(2) Female civil servants are not permitted to become second/third/fourth wives.
(3) The request for a permit as referred to in paragraph (1) shall be submitted in writing.
(4) In the request for permission as referred to in paragraph (3), it must include complete reasons underlying the request for permission to have more than one wife.

Furthermore, in the elucidation of Article 4 paragraph (2) PP 45/1990 it is stated that this provision implies that as long as you are a second/third/fourth wife you are prohibited from becoming a civil servant. Thus, it can be concluded that female civil servants may only become first wives or may not be involved in polygamy cases.
