Deputy Chairperson of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Shura Council Sohibul Iman stated that the party left the determination of the vice-presidential candidate (cawapres) to Anies Baswedan.
“PKS has the attitude that in the process of determining the cawapres, all parties have the right to propose, but in the end the election is left to the presidential candidate, of course through an objective mechanism,” he said in Jakarta, Monday (30/1/2024).
He emphasized that as long as the elected cawapres boosts victory, whoever he is and doesn’t have to be a PKS cadre.
“PKS will still be in this coalition,” he said.
Sohibul explained that the reason for supporting Anies Baswedan as a presidential candidate was the result of the PKS Shura Council deliberations in August 2022.
There are three criteria for a presidential candidate endorsed by PKS, namely a figure of a symbol of change, a figure of religious nationalism, and having the electability that allows him to win.
“We don’t have the highest survey electability term because today’s dynamics are certainly different from the dynamics on February 14, 2024,” he said.
Regarding electability, he said, it was simplest to be included in the top three electability surveys today.
However, it is important to note that PKS has not officially announced its support for Anies as presidential candidate in the 2024 elections. The official decision is planned to be made at the party’s National Working Meeting at the end of next February.
