Peugeot already has a relatively wide electric range, with electric versions of the 208, 2008, Partner, Expert and soon the new E-308 that will even be available as a station wagon (SW), a rarity in the EV world. The only competitors of the E-308 SW are the technically equal Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric and the MG5 Electric. But Peugeot’s EVs all use the same recipe: a combustion car converted to an electric powertrain, almost all with the same powertrain, front-wheel drive and a driving range of 300 to 400 km.
E-3008, E-5008 and E-408 coming soon
That will soon change. Peugeot has announced today, on the self-proclaimed ‘Peugeot E-Lion Day’, that an E-3008 will be on the market this year. Not a converted model, but a completely new generation on the STLA Medium platform that will also support future DS and Alfa Romeo EVs. And that new platform offers a lot more possibilities, such as four-wheel drive thanks to two electric motors and a much larger battery capacity.
Peugeot even promises a range of up to 700 km and three different powertrains. Shortly after the E-3008, the E-5008 will also be launched on the same technical basis, just like the current 3008 and 5008. In addition, there will also be an E-408 on the market, an electric version of the recently launched coupé crossover. It is still on a shared platform with the ICE variant. Peugeot wants to have a fully electric version of every model in its range, which means that the 508 saloon and break will either be removed again or will also get an electric version.
Designing EVs in a different way
By 2030 you will only be able to buy a fully electric Peugeot in Europe. Until then, the French brand is still working on making its combustion models more efficient. For example, there will be a mild hybrid PureTech petrol engine of 100 or 136 hp for everything from the 208 to the 5008. It must be 15% more efficient than the regular petrol engine.
Finally, Peugeot explains how it wants to approach its electric future. For example, the models will take full advantage of the flexibility of an EV powertrain, with different proportions and a completely new i-Cockpit from 2026. The shared know-how with the Stellantis group should provide a better digital experience and an advanced autonomous driving system, while also paying extra attention to sustainability, recycled materials and more easily retreadable parts to extend the life of the cars to 25 years.
But that also means more and more lease formulas and other ways in which the cars come back or remain in the hands of the brand. When it comes to accessibility, Peugeot only speaks of a pay-for-use formula or a private lease formula. And not about keeping the new price of these electric Peugeots accessible…
