Overwatch 2 sta making major changes to matchmaking for season 3 . Instead of going through the whole squad to balance matchmaking rating (MMR), it will now match more evenly to the average MMR across roles. So the opposing team’s Tank should be closer to your skill level.
Since this is a big change, Blizzard will “actively monitor for any unwanted side effects.” He also revealed that in Season 3, victories required in ranked matches will be reduced from seven to five. Also, 15 defeats are required to see an upgrade to your rank.
A mid-season patch will also update the UI to provide visible progress towards the next ranked update. The top 500 players can also see their updated leaderboard every game instead of going through the five-win/loss-15 cycle. In Season 4, the team will remove seasonal rank resets and any current and past rank decays.
We will continue to build Competitive Updates in Season 4 as we add information about your current wins and losses to the Competitive Update screens. We hope this additional context helps you better interpret the changes to your skill level and division in the update. The team is also looking into ways to inform players about the quality of matchmaking.
Overwatch 2 Season 3 has not received a launch date, so stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
