“It scared me because I said, ‘Look, that’s how scary childhood is.'”Del Toro says.
For the Mexican filmmaker, the conception of this story changed over time, since when he became an adult he began to find possibilities within the same plot that had scared him as a child.
“You realize that it is a universal story that can be applied to everything, to art, politics, parenthood, it is a harsh metaphor for creation, it is a metaphor for so many things that you can apply to science fiction, to the fascist era, to a metaphor about lies in politics, in the family, etc.says the director.

How was Pinocchio made?
Del Toro had become the creator of disturbing creatures and terrifying monsters when he finally managed to carve his own pinocchio.
It took him over a decade to bring it to the screen.because although at the beginning of his career (in the 80s) he had dreamed of making animated short films with puppets, an assault on his studio postponed the realization.

In El Taller del Chucho, from his native Guadalajara, the animators worked on the second unit of Pinocchio; another was done in Portland with a total of 60 sets working at the same time.
Three thousand 443 frames (frames) were used in Guadalajara, 33 shots, 210 briefing meetings with the Portland team, one thousand days of shooting.
