Not only Guillermo de Toro with Pinocchio! Four years after having overwhelmed the ceremony with “Roma”, the filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón will also return to seek the Oscar 2023 in the category of Best Fiction Short Film with “Le pupille”.
The story follows a group of girls from a Catholic boarding school before Christmas, in a time of war and scarcity.
In his showcases Cuarón has the awards from the Academy to Address (“ROME” and “Gravity”); Editing (“Gravity”) and Photography (“Roma”).
Who is Alfonso Cuarón, nominated for the Oscars 2023?
Alfonso Cuaron was born in Mexico City in 1961 and as a child, he played soldiers, there he realized that A story had a beginning, a middle, and an end.
One day when he left school he found a star, the kind that sticks to his forehead. He put it on and when he got home, his mom treated him well. That’s when he realized that recognition was useful.
He liked to go to the extinct Gloria and Estadio cinemas where he spent most of the day. He had his first camera when he was 11 years old. and, well into his teens, long hair and hippie looks were not well received by the neighbors.
When he went to restaurants, he liked to order exotic dishes, recalls his brother, the writer Carlos Cuarón, because he could order monkey brain as a soup, much to everyone’s surprise.
He entered the CUEC, school of cine from UNAM, and there he met Luis Estrada (“Hell”) and Emmanuel Lubezki who would eventually be his running mate in Hollywood.
With Estrada he made the short “Vengeance is mine” for the CUEC, for which he was expelled from school. “Things were like that,” said the director.
The beginnings of Alfonso Cuarón
The phrase that Cuarón learned during his initial work in cinema was “he who knows how to obey, knows how to command.” And every time they accepted him in a job, he applied it. This was the person who brought the coffees during the first days of filming “Disappeared”, by Costa Gavras.
He worked as a director on the horror and suspense series “La hora marcada”.
“Sólo con tu pareja”, his first film, he wrote together with his brother Carlos for three months: they took advantage of the 1990 Soccer World Cup in Italy and a disappointment in love to end this film starring Daniel Giménez Cacho, about AIDS.
