BUCHAREST – A interview live on television Rumania about the local effects of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine turned awkward. This is because the country’s agriculture minister, Petre Daea, appeared to be asleep when the presenter asked the question.
Video clips posted on social media show excerpts of the interview, which appeared on CNN’s Antenna 3, the Romanian news partner of US cable news giant CNN. With two co-hosts watching, the host purportedly asked Daea over the phone about the negative consequences of the Ukraine crisis for Romanian farmers. As he paused to hear the answer, a clear snoring could be heard on the other end of the line.

The interviewer quickly tried to adjust quickly, saying that he would try to reconnect with the agriculture minister, as if their phone call had been cut off. The two co-hosts in the studio appeared to be holding back laughter, as one covered his mouth and the other smiled awkwardly and looked down as quoted by Russia Today, Sunday (15/1/2023).
Daea, 73, was appointed as agriculture minister last July, after his predecessor resigned amid allegations of corruption. He had two previous stints in the job, in 2004 and from 2017 to 2019.

While the embarrassing incident in his most recent television interview was most likely unintentional. Daea has a reputation for colorful comments and jokes. For example, he opposed efforts to promote edible insects by saying: “Don’t eat cricket flour. Let them sing wherever they are. We ate what we ate: sarmale, sausage and eggs. You wouldn’t replace chicken eggs with worms.”
He also likens himself to photovoltaic panels, saying that he charges from the sun, and at night, he has energy from the day.
