A superficially growing pigment spot on the face or on the head (lentigo maligna), which is caused by exposure to ultraviolet light, can develop into a melanoma over the years. Melanoma is a malignant form of skin cancer that can spread. Because these spots are often large, grow slowly and can become malignant, they are removed with a large area of healthy skin around them.
