Thanks to the Carabinieri. Both at the ROS, Special Operations Department, but also to the motorcyclists and the men of the Radio Mobile of Palermo who today 16 January 2022 wrote an important page for the history of the Italian Republic. Matteo Messina Denaro, Mafia boss and Italy’s most wanted fugitive, has finally been caught.
The Carabinieri del Ros caught him after 30 years on the run. The investigation was coordinated by the prosecutor of Palermo, Maurizio de Lucia and by the deputy prosecutor Paolo Guido. Son of the old mafia boss of Castelvetrano, Ciccio, he was a historic ally of Totò Riina. He had been hiding with impunity since 1993, when he wrote to his girlfriend at the time after the mafia massacres in Rome, Milan and Florence. In that letter he communicated the beginning of his life as a fugitive.
The offender was sentenced to life imprisonment for dozens of murders, including the odious one of little Giuseppe Di Matteo, the son of the repentant who was dissolved in acid after 2 years of imprisonment. He too was convicted of the massacres of ’92, which cost the lives of judges Falcone and Borsellino and their escort. And for the 1993 attacks in Milan, Florence and Rome. Matteo Messina Denaro was taken into a private clinic in Palermo, where he had obviously gone under a false name. He didn’t put up any resistance.
