VENICE, 21 JAN – Mafia Spa has a turnover of 40 billion a year, equal to over 2% of our GDP. This is a turnover lower only than the turnover of Gse (Energy Services Manager), Eni and Enel, but these figures are underestimated. This is what emerges from a study by the CGIA, which defines “embarrassing” how since 2014 the EU, with a specific legislative provision, has allowed all member countries to count some illegal economic activities in their GDP: such as prostitution, drug trafficking and cigarette smuggling. “Thanks” to this opportunity, in 2020 (latest data available) we “inflated” national wealth by 17.4 billion (almost one point of GDP). An ethically unacceptable decision. As various studies have shown, at the territorial level the most widespread presence of criminal economic organizations is in the South, even if by now a great deal of evidence points to the presence of these illegal organizations in the more economically advanced areas of the Centre-North. According to the Bank of Italy, a large part of the South, Rome, Ravenna, Latina, Genoa and Imperia are the areas most at risk. The provinces of Turin, Lodi, Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Varese, Milan, Brescia, Savona, La Spezia, Bologna, Prato, Ferrara, Rimini, Pistoia, Florence, Livorno are also less affected, but in any case with serious critical situations. , Arezzo, Viterbo, Ancona and Macerata. The provinces of Triveneto are less invested (with slight signs of a countertrend in Venice, Padua, Trento and, in particular, Trieste). Valle d’Aosta and Umbria also present a very low level of risk. In the South, the only areas completely “immune” from the presence of the mafia phenomenon would be the provinces of Matera, Chieti, Campobasso and the Sardinian realities of Oristano, Olbia-Tempio and Sassari. In addition to the 17.4 billion “produced” by illegal activities (through drug trafficking, cigarette smuggling and prostitution), the national GDP “absorbs” another 157 billion: of which 79.7 are “hidden” by the sub-declaration, 62.4 billion from irregular work and 15.2 billion from the Other item (that is, tips, undeclared rent, etc.).
