What has the Marvel Studios DCU copied? These are James Gunn’s plans for the next steps Warner Bros. Discovery will take.
James Gunn has copied Marvel for the new DCU. In the comments section of a recent Instagram post, the DC Studios co-CEO teased that he will be announcing projects for his first “chapter” of the storytelling in the near future today. That is, he will not reveal the entire list of what is to come in the next eight or ten years. It will follow the pattern set by the UCM.
“I’m not going to announce the 8-10 year slate,” James Gunn said about the future of the DCU in movies. “Just a few projects from the first chapter.” Many have now theorized that this is how Gunn will organize the new DC Universeusing the term “chapters” in the same way that Marvel Studios has done with “Phases” since the MCU debuted in 2008 with the first Iron Man movie.
What are the expectations with the DC announcements?
Looking at what James Gunn has in store for this new era of the DCU, it may not be surprising to see the franchise take what has worked for Marvel Studios for so long. Although Gunn himself has admitted to not being aware of what Phase his films are in, he may be looking to use this insight to help better organize his own franchise now that he’s in charge of such a big story.
The only questions now are whether this “chapter” idea is really what James Gunn plans to do with the DCU and how long each chapter will last. For example, Marvel’s Phase 1 lasted from 2008 to 2012 and consisted of six movies, starting with Iron Man and ending with The Avengers. Considering the state of the superhero cinematic universe in the current era, Gunn certainly has the option to advertise a larger list if he so chooses, though he can choose to keep things simpler. in order to make sure the fans are hooked from the start.
