Since its original launch in that distant 2013, The Last of Us has conquered millions of players with its story and iconic characters. Many fans wished that the actors who gave life to the protagonists would return to reprise their roles in the live action series.
While that was not the case for the most part, some of the actors who participated in the PlayStation title did appear in the TV show.
Troy Baker, who plays Joel in the Naughty Dog video game, plays a supporting character known as James in the ambitious HBO production. For her part, Ashley Johnson, who voiced her to Ellie, plays a pregnant woman in the series. Jeffrey Pierce, Tommy Miller in the game, plays a new character.

Without a doubt, Merle Dandridge, who plays Marlene in the 2013 title, has a special place on the list. We say this because she is the only actress who repeated her role in the live action series of The Last of Us. What is this about?

In a recent interview with the Entertainment Weekly portal, the producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann spoke about the decision to include the original actors in the television show. There, they explain that Merle Dandridge is physically very similar to the character she plays in the game, something that doesn’t happen with Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, for example.
“(Merle Dandridge) is forever young. It’s been 10 years (since the game’s release) and he still has that wonderful aura. So it was really a matter of ‘hey, if we put a movie on it, I think we’re there.’ That was easy. Obviously, it’s not something we can contemplate with, say, Troy Baker,” said Neil Druckmann, co-chairman of Naughty Dog.

Craig Mazin points out that Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson are physically very different from Joel and Ellie, respectively. Therefore, they could not interpret their characters again. However, he explains that they wanted them to participate in The Last of Us series in other roles.
“Ashley Johnson is 30 years old and is clearly not going to play a 14-year-old girl, but it was important for us to find a space for them (on the show) because they are important. It’s not just about fanservice. It’s a connection between the game and the show. They needed to be there,” argued Craig Mazin.
