Chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar (Gus Muhaimin) threw down the idea of abolishing the post of regional head at the governor level.
Responding to the idea of abolishing the governorship, Constitutional Law Expert from Nusa Cendana University (Undana) Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Dr. Johanes Tuba Helan, admitted that he supports the idea that was rolled out by the political elite.
“In my opinion, if the idea of abolishing the governor is realized, there will be huge savings in the state budget and more guarantees for the effectiveness of governance and service to the community,” said Tuba Helan, Tuesday (31/1/2023) quoted from Antara.
PKB, as stated by Muhaimin, is currently finalizing a study with experts regarding the abolition of the governor’s post, because the governor is only a link between the central and regional governments.

Tuba Helan said that this idea was essential, namely regional autonomy at one level, namely district/city, because districts/cities are closer to the people and provide direct services to the people.
The province, he said, is sufficient to become a deconcentration device, so that the governor does not need to be elected by the people as is still the case today.
The Undana Law Faculty lecturer said that thus governors as central officials in the regions are appointed by appointing ministers by the president after the president is inaugurated.
“Ministers lead government sectors such as education, health and others. Governors are replaced by heads of provinces who are tasked with coordinating, supervising and fostering the implementation of district/city regional autonomy,” he also said.
Tuba Helan said, however, there were consequences when this idea was realized, namely that there was no longer a provincial-level Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD).

Apart from that, at the provincial level, he said, there is no longer a need for regional offices and agencies, but it is enough to have a secretariat consisting of experts in sectoral fields, in order to be able to foster the implementation of regional administration.
Therefore, he said, to realize this idea needs to be discussed more intensively, but in principle this idea is very advanced for the welfare of the people.
“This idea is indeed very advanced for the welfare of the people, but to make it happen, various parties need to discuss it more intensively,” he also said.
