In the words of the director and screenwriter Eduardo Casanova: “La Piedad is a horror film, an unconventional horror, that talks about the most toxic relationship possible between a mother and a son, establishing a parallelism between a dictatorship and its people, specifically the dictatorship of North Korea. We have all been in a toxic relationship, it doesn’t matter if it was with a partner, a friend or with our own family. Relationships are deeply complicated, I’m sure that anyone who is reading this text is or has been in a relationship like this, but… How do you get out of there? If you manage to get out, how and how long do you stay there?
