The American also wins the second giant and aims for an historic record. Eighth the Brignone, off the Bassino
It’s always Mikaela Shiffrin: even the second giant of Plan de Corones belongs to the US champion destined to break every record. Triumph number 84 in the World Cup also arrived on Erta, now Stenmark’s record (86) is really one step away. And Shiffrin will have the double opportunity of next weekend’s two slaloms to try to reach him.
The blue ones
—
The regret of the day is by Marta Bassino. Third after the first heat, Marta was on course to at least get back on the podium. But with three doors to go she lay down on the snow in a left hand bend and then snuck into the next door. Federica Brignone finished eighth, starting to attack to recover from fifth place in the first heat but ran into a couple of slips that relegated her to eighth place, 2”03 behind Shiffrin. On the podium are the Norwegian Mowinckel, second at 82/100 from Shiffrin, and the Swedish Hector, third at 1”19. Then Vlhova (at 1”37) and Lara Gut (at 1”38), moving up 10 positions thanks to the best time in the heats. Nineteenth at 3”09 is the other blue, Asja Zenere. Lara Colturi shines like yesterday. The sixteen year old from Piedmont who competes for Albania comes back from thirtieth place and is still seventeenth. Another step forward in a season that is already worthy of applause.
Predominance
—
To explain Shiffrin’s dominance, it would be enough to look at the second heat: where the others – including Bassino and Brignone – struggled or made mistakes, she passed confidently and precisely like on a track, never in difficulty. Composed and very fast, always giving the impression of being well within her limits, Mikaela crossed the finish line and threw herself on the ground, celebrated by Mowinckel and Hector. For her it is the 19th success in giant, the tenth hit of the season in 21 races played.
