After a period of calm, terrorism has returned to Spain, and it has done so in Algeciras, where yesterday a man murdered the sacristan of a local church and left several people injured after an assault with machetes.
The sacristan, named Diego Valencia, is already being watched in the town to which he gave his life.
The perpetrator, named Yassin Kanjaa, not only attacked the people who were in the parish at that time, but on the way from his house to the place he also attacked people he was passing, as well as towards the second church where he assaulted the priest.
An hour before the attack, Yassin had already been in the parish. He picked up a gospel and started yelling that it didn’t work, so they asked him to respect him and to leave. But hours later he returned and the events occurred.
The young man, barely 25 years old, was arrested and is now being investigated as the alleged murderer of the sacristan of the La Palma church. The police were already tracking him because he was in Spain irregularly.
We have spoken live with Juan José Marina, parish priest of the church where everything happened. He was not there at the time. “If I am alive it is because Diego has died”, said the priest. He is clear that what the alleged murderer wanted was to kill the priest, as he did in the church of San Isidro, which he later went to.
The events occurred five minutes after the end of the mass, and he went to another parish for confirmation. “A parishioner came up to me and showed me what happened. I just went blank,” he has said. It’s news, he assures him, they are seen on TV but you don’t imagine it could happen.
He went quickly, but when Diego arrived he was already dead. What has happened they could never have expected after all the years he has been there. “Most of the people he helps are Muslims, so coexistence was good,” he assured.
