Without a doubt, the video game of the moment is HI-FI Rush, the new project from Tango Gameworks that made its surprise debut after its presentation at the Developer Direct this week. Now, it was its director, John Johanas, who revealed when the peculiar concept of this action title was born.
During a recent live broadcast, John Johanas confessed to the audience that he came up with the idea behind this rhythm game after finishing development on The Evil Within 2, a video game he directed.

It is important to note that the horror title debuted in 2017, which means that the creative presented the concept of HI-FI Rush long before Microsoft announced the purchase of Bethesda in 2020.

Was HI-FI Rush developed with Xbox Game Pass in mind? This says the director
“It’s like one of those dream games I had a long, long time ago. We finished working on The Evil Within 2, and we had just done 2 hard games in a row. We knew that GhostWire: Tokyo was in production and that it would be the next game we would make. So I said, ‘what if I present this?’, said the director.
Right away, John Johanas denies that they made the title for Xbox Game Pass, a theory that gained strength thanks to this week’s surprise launch. On the other hand, he claims that he thought Bethesda would reject his idea.
“I know many say we did this because of Game Pass, but it takes longer than that. And I said, ‘this is the least Bethesda game I can imagine; It’s going to be a long shot, but I have this idea,’” concluded the director of HI-FI Rush.
Hi-Fi Rush was John Johanas’ dream game, he pitched the idea in 2017 after finishing work on The Evil Within 2.

Although the creative dismisses the theory that the title was developed with Xbox Game Pass in mind, it seems that the service contributed to a lesser or greater extent to the surprise debut. This, at least, according to Phil Spencer, who said this week that Game Pass made it easier to launch the project.
Perhaps without Microsoft’s subscription service, Tango Gameworks would have opted for a more traditional marketing strategy. For better or for worse, we will never know. Either way, HI-FI Rush is already a bestseller on Steam, which shows that the developers made the right decision.
