TEHERAN – Former Iranian official Alireza Akbari was sentenced to death. This is because he was accused of being a British spy.
According to the official IRNA news agency, Akbari was found guilty of corruption as well as extensive acts on Iran’s internal and external security through the transmission of information to Britain.
Alireza Akbari had appealed against his sentence, but was rejected by Iran’s Supreme Court.
Iran’s Intelligence Ministry said Akbari was one of the top agents of the British intelligence agency, M16. He is said to have handed over important Iranian information to the UK.

Regarding the sentence against the man who has dual Iranian-British citizenship, various reactions emerged.
British Foreign Minister James Cleverly said the death sentence was a politically motivated act.
Cleverly also said that Iran must immediately stop the execution of the British-Iranian citizen, Alireza Akbari, and release him immediately.
According to him, this action was a politically motivated act by a barbaric regime that totally ignored human life.
Alireza Akbari’s wife, Maryam, said on Wednesday (11/1/2023), her husband had been taken to solitary confinement. The family has also been informed that this visit will be the last visit.
