BRUSSELS, 16 JAN – “The figures, the numbers, the indicators on confidence that we are seeing tell us that in Europe we can avoid a serious recession and have a short period of contraction”. This was stated by the European Commissioner for the Economy Paolo Gentiloni, arriving at the Eurogroup. Gentiloni said he was “confident” that all the countries adhering to the European Stability Mechanism (MES) will ratify the revision of its regulation. It is useful “for Italy to ratify a revised statute that serves all countries regardless of who will use it and who instead decides not to use it”. “It is useful for the existence of this tool” then “we can decide whether to use or not to use some facilities that the Mes makes available”. “The decision” on ratification “is up to the Italian government and we will see in what terms and when it will be taken”.
