LONDON, 23 JAN – Savings on the bill for those who keep the lights off today in the United Kingdom between 4.30 and 6 pm local time. It is the offer put on the plate by National Grid, the public manager of the electricity networks, to limit consumption on a day deemed field. The measure had already been mentioned as possible at the beginning of the season, in the face of the risks that the island – like other countries – is forced to face in terms of energy supplies: further aggravated by the consequences of the war in Ukraine and the anti-Russian sanctions , as well as from the winter cold. However, it is the first time that it has entered into force as part of a consumption alert that has never reached the levels of the estimated potentially worst-case scenarios so far. The scheme provides that users can have up to 50% more reimbursements than the consumption containment plans set by their contract during the times of maximum pressure on the service. So that the grid can accumulate electricity savings and keep it in reserve. However, the situation is currently under control, as confirmed by the parallel decision by National Grid not to restart three coal-fired plants. Plants designated months ago as a hypothetical reserve source, in case of absolute shortage and immediate need, after having been decommissioned in the past as part of the environmental commitments undertaken also at international conferences such as CoP 26 promoted by the UN for respond to the threat of climate change.
