In a time where abusive downloadable content exists, promising that your game will be DLC-free is a very interesting selling point. While these kinds of promises may be made with good intentions, sometimes context can change everything, just like it did with a popular FPS on PC.
What happens is that Squad, a game from Offworld Industries, will receive paid downloadable content. There would be nothing wrong or strange about this if it weren’t for one reason: when Offworld Industries announced Squad it promised that it would never sell paid DLC. With this, the developer will break a promise of years that he made to his fans.
But what kind of paid content will Squad get? These are 2 packs of emotes that will come with a set of free emotes that all players will receive automatically.
“Emotes are animations that you can use to express yourself, interact with others, celebrate in-game situations, or brighten down time. We hope they will enhance the social and cinematic aspects of your Squad experiences,” the studio announced.

Squad needs to have DLC for a reason
As you know, Offworld Industries acknowledges that they are breaking their promise by adding paid DLC for Squad. However, there is a very good reason why the developers are deciding to add paid content in their game.
What happens is that Offworld ensures that the emotes is a way in which players can support Squad. This is important, as having a new source of income is crucial to keeping the game in a healthy state so that we can continue to release free updates.
“We understand that paid content in games can be controversial and that previous Offworld leadership had stated that paid DLC would never be added to Squad. Therefore, we wanted to inform you of this change before the anticipated release of version 4.22, ”explained the study.
The Squad community had mixed reactions to the announcement.
With such an announcement, it would be normal to expect the community to rise up in arms and complain loudly about the change. However, the reality is different since, although it can be said that the reaction was mixed, a large part of the community took things calmly.
On reddit, several Squad fans have expressed their opinion. Many of them understand that it is a way to support the studio and recognize that it is a completely optional purchase. Others believe that if the time comes when the content becomes abusive, then they are ready to withdraw from Squad.
