WARSAW (AP/RTR) – Poland will appoint Fernando Santos as national coach. The 68-year-old Santos will succeed the Pole Czeslaw Michniewicz, reports chairman Cezary Kulesza of the Polish Football Association PZPN.
Santos saw his contract with the Portuguese Football Federation terminated after Portugal was eliminated by Morocco in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar. Michniewicz was told in December that his contract with the Polish Football Association was not renewed.
Chairman Kulesza announced on Sunday that the new national coach will be presented on Tuesday. Kulesza shared a photo with Santos on Twitter on Monday evening after the Portuguese was photographed earlier in the day at the airport of the Polish capital Warsaw. “See you tomorrow at the press conference,” he wrote.
Under Santos, Portugal won the European title in 2016 and the Nations League in 2019. He also previously coached FC Porto, AEK Athens, Panathinaikos, Sporting, Benfica, PAOK and national coach of Greece, among others.
Poland managed to qualify for the knockout phase for the first time in 36 years at the World Cup in Qatar under Michniewicz. The team of captain Robert Lewandowski had to beat France (1-3) in the eighth finals.
