Flooding in Malaysia Widens, Thousands of Johor Bahru and Sabah Residents Evacuated. PHOTO/Reuters
KUALA LUMPUR – Thousands of refugees flood had to flee their respective homes in Johor and Sabah amidst the northeastern monsoon which brought continuous torrential rains to several states Malaysia .
As of Thursday (26/1/2023) at 12 pm, Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) recorded 5,528 flood victims in Johor and 6,331 flood victims in Sabah. This is an increase from the 3,937 flood victims in Johor recorded 24 hours earlier.

Bernama reported that 55 relief centers were opened in Johor at 8am to accommodate the flood evacuees. Segamat is the worst affected district in Johor, followed by Kluang and Mersing.
Meanwhile, Sabah has accommodated more than 6,000 new flood refugees in just one day. According to Bernama, 26 flood relief centers opened at 8 am on Thursday. Districts that recorded a sudden surge in refugees on Wednesday include Kota Marudu, Kudat and Paitan.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) warned on Wednesday that rainfall is expected to last in several parts of the country, including the state of Borneo, until next Monday.

Last month, Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee, called for immediate long-term measures to solve the country’s flood problem, including a holistic flood mitigation project.
Ahmad Zahid said that such flood management efforts, if completed, could ensure good long-term flood management until 2100.
Flooding is an annual phenomenon in Malaysia due to the northeastern monsoon which brings heavy rains from November to March.
