Feyenoord captain Orkun Kökcü starts the Classic against Ajax on Sunday with a good feeling. The midfielder believes that the leader of the Netherlands “can win every game in the Eredivisie”.
“We have every confidence, but we should not think that we are going to do it for a while,” says Kökcü two days before the game in De Kuip. “We should not walk with our heads in the clouds. Ajax has qualities to win matches. But faith is on our side and that is due to the flow we are in and the fact that Ajax has missed points.”
Also on the street in Rotterdam there seems to be more confidence in a good outcome against Ajax than for previous editions of the Classic. “I don’t speak to many people, but when I am approached they say: ‘this is the chance to grab them’. We have made the people of Rotterdam proud again lately, we have been able to make people happy again.”
Biggest game of the year
In the meantime, Kökcü is looking forward to his “first real Classic” against Ajax. “Due to various circumstances, I have not yet played this match in Amsterdam. I played it twice at home, but then there was no audience due to the corona measures. Fortunately, that is now the case again. It is the biggest match in the Netherlands, the match of the year.”
Feyenoord is at the top of the Eredivisie with 37 points after sixteen games, 4 points more than AZ and 5 points more than Ajax and PSV. The Classic starts on Sunday at 2.30 pm in Rotterdam.
