Excelsior has further distanced itself from the bottom places of the Eredivisie. The club climbed to the provisional eleventh place in the ranking with a home win against FC Volendam (2-0). Volendam remains the penultimate number of the competition, with 3 points more than SC Cambuur.
FC Volendam closed the first two league games of the new year against SC Cambuur and RKC Waalwijk with a win. The club gathered as many points in those matches as in the first fourteen meetings of this season in the Eredivisie.
Against Excelsior, coach Wim Jonk’s team unfortunately fell behind in the 18th minute. Goalkeeper Filip Stankovic missed a corner kick and saw his surprised defender Damon Mirani work the ball into his own goal.
Excelsior was close to a second goal just before half-time. But Couhaib Driouech hit the post after a scrimmage in front of the visitors’ goal. Excelsior was also the better team after the break. But the game remained exciting until the 80th minute because the home team did not take any further distance from Volendam. Then Marouan Azarkan made the liberating 2-0, on a pass from Julian Baas.
