When Disney+ was introduced at the end of 2019, it was still free to use for the Dutch for two months. After that, everyone paid 6.99 euros per month or 69.90 euros per year. A year later, prices already rose to 8.99 euros per month or 89.90 euros per year.
Now the price has risen again, according to the Disney + site. A subscription now costs 9.99 euros per month or 99.90 euros per year for new subscribers. Nothing will change for people who already have a subscription. In any case, annual subscriptions for the old price remain available for the full term without paying extra.
It is not yet known when existing subscribers will pay the higher price. Disney must give customers at least one month’s notice before doing so.
Cheaper subscription with advertisements
The price increase is expected to be in preparation for the upcoming Disney+ commercialized variant. In the US, among others, that subscription has been there since December. There it costs the same as the more expensive subscription before: 8 dollars per month. The subscription without advertising has become more expensive there.
Something similar could also happen here, for example with a subscription for 8 or 9 euros per month, with a few minutes of advertising per hour.
Price increase Viaplay
Streaming services regularly raise their prices. Earlier this week, for example, Viaplay became more expensive: from 13.99 to 15.99 euros per month. With that price, ViaPlay is the most expensive of the video services in our country, together with Netflix, where the most expensive subscription also costs 15.99 euros per month.
Disney has not yet made a profit from Disney+, and expects to do so for the first time next year. Now billions are lost because Disney + is kept attractive with large, expensive productions. However, they are not yet earned back with the number of subscribers.
