This is reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). But the number of more than 74,000 new homes does not yet come close to the government’s target of 100,000 new homes per year.
And that also means that it will not be possible to achieve this year’s number again in the coming years.
Expensive building materials
This is because the costs for building materials have increased and there are also higher interest rates. The Economic Institute for Construction (EIB) reported last week that it expects fewer homes to be delivered this year and next.
It is estimated that about 70,000 homes can be built per year. In addition to the increased costs and higher interest rates, a shortage of suitable construction sites and a shortage of civil servants to process building permit applications also play a role.
New homes in cities and provinces
Most homes were built in Amsterdam; with nearly 6,800 new homes, the total number of homes in the capital increased by 1.5 percent to around 475,000 homes. In the cities of Utrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam, more than 2,000 homes were built per city.
Looking at the provinces, most houses were built in South Holland. This involved more than 14,500 new homes. Many new houses were also built in North Holland, about 14,000, and about 12,000 more houses were built in North Brabant.
The strongest percentage increase was seen in Flevoland, with 1.6 percent. According to Statistics Netherlands, this is due to the strong population growth in Flevoland in the past year.
Housing shortage
It is bad news for Hugo de Jonge, Minister of Housing and Spatial Planning, that in the coming years there will once again be no question of building 100,000 new homes every year.
This number was set to solve the housing shortage in the Netherlands, but everything seems to indicate that these numbers will not be achieved.
