Cyclist Sam Bennett has won the first stage in the Tour of San Juan in Argentina. The Irish sprinter from Bora-hansgrohe was the best in the bunch sprint of the first stage that started in San Juan and also finished there after 143.9 kilometers.
Danny van Poppel put his teammate Bennett off well. He stayed ahead of the Dane Michael Mørkøv and the Italian Giacomo Nizzolo. Van Poppel himself crossed the line in fourth place.
Fabio Jakobsen seemed to get a regal sprint train with world champion Remco Evenepoel, the Belgian Yves Lampaert and Mørkøv. However, the European champion saw himself eliminated for the sprint after ending up behind Evenepoel in the wrong, unfenced, lane.
The Tour of San Juan lasts until Sunday.
