Dutch cyclist Loes Adegeest has won the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race. After a race over 143 kilometers around Geelong, near Melbourne, she beat Australia’s Amanda Spratt in the sprint. The 26-year-old Adegeest thus booked her first victory in the WorldTour for her new French team FDJ-Suez.
Adegeest and 35-year-old Spratt had jumped away from the peloton on the last climb. “To start the season like this is incredible,” said the cyclist from Overijssel. “It’s only January and I’ve already won a WorldTour race.” The Dutch Nina Buijsman won the sprint of the peloton and finished third.
The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race for men is scheduled for Sunday. They drive 176 kilometers. The race bears the name of the Australian former cyclist Cadel Evans, winner of the Tour de France in 2011.
