At the end of 2022, a total of 60 thousand 523 insured vehicles were stolen in the country, a 2.6% reduction compared to the previous year, reported the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS).
According to the agency, 43% of the units were recovered, however, there was a reduction of 2 percentage points in the recovery frequency compared to 2021.
The general director of AMIS, Norma Alicia Rosas, highlighted that although there was a reduction in this crime in general terms, there is a rebound mainly in the theft of heavy transport and motorcycles, in addition to being increasingly violent incidents. Thus, the theft of heavy equipment and motorcycles grew 22.9% and 18.1%, respectively.
The most stolen cars
The AMIS data shows that The Versa is the most stolen insured car in Mexico, with a total of 3 thousand 99 units, with a decrease of 5.5% in annual terms. In second place, the NP300 truck, with a total of 2,511 unitsequivalent to a decrease of 3.6%. In third place is the CRVwith a total of 1,996 robberies, presenting a downward variation of 17.5%.
In fourth place, Kenworth, with a total of 1,902 stolen unitsthis is a shot of 29.1% and in fifth place, the Aveo, with 1,816 robberies, a drop of 11.7 percent.
Car theft in Mexico
According to AMIS, 55.11% of the theft of insured vehicles in Mexico was with the use of violencewhere Sinaloa, Zacatecas and Guerrero are the entities with the highest percentage of theft of vehicles violently.
AMIS explained that in the case of units stolen in heavy transport, the semi-trailer leads the list of robbery with the use of violence, where 8 out of 10 thefts are registered violently. In the case of motorcycles, the Honda 111-250 ranked with a total of 933 thefts, with a frequency of violent crime of 49.3 percent.
