The Rai interview with Claudia, the eldest daughter of the former footballer who died prematurely at the age of 39: “The criminal investigation into our father’s case was closed. The others? Certainly there were players on that team who contracted serious illnesses and are deceased”
The death of Gianluca Vialli and the recent statements by Dino Baggio, which suggest a link between the substances administered to the players and the diseases subsequently contracted, have revived the theme. To talk about it is Claudia Beatrice, daughter of Bruno Beatrice, a former footballer among others of Fiorentina in the seventies. The player died at the age of 39 due to leukemia and his untimely death was followed by other suspicious deaths of athletes who wore the purple jersey in that period (including Saltutti, Galdiolo, Longoni, Mattolini). “My father underwent a very long and dangerous x-ray therapy, which he did for groins. Each session lasted 30-45 minutes and was done every other day. If you calculate how much exposure there is for a broken finger or a leg, or perhaps to the dentist, there is no need for luminaries to reach the conclusion” Claudia said in an interview with Rai News 24.
The memory
—
Claudia’s mother has fought for years to clarify the matter, without too many results from a procedural point of view. “The treatment lasted three months – continued Beatrice’s daughter – the doctors had not revealed to him the danger of the disease, otherwise he would have been a moron to undergo such a risky therapy. In medical treatises it was written that a treatment with X-rays could have led to leukemia after about ten years. The criminal investigation has been closed, the civil case is still open, there is some news I can’t talk about. I don’t know what to say about the other deaths. Of course there have been other players from that team who contracted major illnesses and died.”
The experience
—
Prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello, who had followed the trial against Juventus in the 1990s, recently returned to talking about doping, claiming a major step backwards in dealing with the phenomenon legally. Claudia Beatrice supports his theses: “He’s right when he says that there is more doping than anti-doping. It is equally true that the line has become much thinner. I’m not a doctor, but just look at the performance of some players who start in a condition and end up in another. They are monitored and checked regularly, I believe there is a link between certain treatments and the serious consequences”. Finally, Claudia did not hide her sadness for having lost her father when she was just a child. “The pain is unspeakable, because it has been going on since 1985 (the year in which Beatrice fell ill, ed), my brother and I were respectively 8 and 6 years old, it is something that cannot be imagined. We have never celebrated a birthday again” he concluded.
